Robbers kill 8
policemen
VINCENT ADEKOYE, Benin
ESPIRIT
de corps among policemen in Edo State was at its nadir yesterday as news of the
murder of eight policemen, by robbers, spread in Benin City, the state capital.
At least one inspector, a
sergeant and six constables were felled by the robbers’ bullets in two
separate incidents Monday night, in Benin City, without a single casualty on the
hoodlums’ side.
A visibly distraught state police
spokesman Mr. Fatai Kinyomi (an assistant superintendent) recounted the
incidents in the Ugbowo and Ikpoba Hill areas of the city, to bewildered
policemen and women at their headquarters.
By Mr. Kinyomi’s account,
"At about 8.00 p.m on Monday, our patrol team at the Ugbowo Police Station
which included the divisional police officer (DPO) were on the move. They parked
their vehicle in front of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
"The DPO and one other
officer stepped down from the vehicle, to observe the environment.
"At this point, robbers
numbering six moved close to the patrol van and opened fire on the four
policemen inside, killing them instantly.
"When this was going on, the
DPO and the other officer went back to confront the robbers who immediately fled
the scene, abandoning the vehicle they brought to the scene.
"Few minutes later, the same
robbers, who were armed with AK-47 rifles and police bullet proof vests, moved
to Auchi road and laid siege to another patrol team in the area.
"As the patrol men were just
parking their van, the robbers did not even allow them to move. They opened fire
and killed four of the men inside the police vehicle.
"It was a sad day for us and
we shall do everything possible to get these murderers, because it was an
organised action against the police; it was a black night for us", he
lamented.
When Daily Champion
visited the command’s state headquarters yesterday, normal activities were
paralysed as the rank and file were seen wailing openly for their murdered
collleagues .
Reports said that the policemen
felled included some who had just been posted to the Edo State command.
It may be recalled that more than 20 criminals
have been shot dead by men of the command since the past two months in a renewed
battle against robbery.
