Who needs NEEDS?
The president has
come up with another
laudable programme on national development which requires a multi-sectoral approach and mass mobilization of network of stakeholders tagged NEEDS. That is, National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy. In essence, the federal government accepted the fact that poverty is indeed a challenge which deserves a priority attention. It is believed that NEEDS is a short-term policy framework designed to promote macro-economic stability, reduce poverty, generate employment and probably create wealth for the nation. It may also improve the performance of the agricultural, manufacturing, solid mineral, oil and gas sectors and finally improve the performance of the delivery of basic services to the people of Nigeria.
NEEDS, they say will generate more than one million jobs before the end of the year and about five million by 2007. As usual, the jobs are still not forth coming. Why must we always wait for the American government to pronounce a policy and volunteer to sponsor it before we know what to do? Nigeria keeps claiming to be a giant of Africa, in terms of corrupt leadership, gullible followership all sailing in a ship to an uncertain destination. Why can’t Nigerian government go back to its cultural background and build a sustainable development plan on it, instead of being a stooge of propagating the American culture in the name of modernisaton?
The President should have a rethink of any policy proposed by his IMF/World Bank aides and stop looking at them as “never do wrong.” He should try to ask himself the origin of such policies, the benefits and most importantly, the consequences. This is because, Nigeria’s problem of dancing to the gallery of the international community by receiving regional titles without something to show for it, is indeed unfortunate.
