Iyayi, Others Flay INEC over 2003 Polls From Lillian Okenwa in Abuja Former Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and human rights activist, Dr. Festus Iyayi, has flayed the the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its shoddy handling of the 2003 polls. The knocks from Iyayi came yesterday at the on-going Annual National General/Delegates Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja in which other lawyers and discussants also criticised the electoral body over its conduct of the elections. They held that the role played by the electoral body with regards to the conduct of the 2003 general elections as well as the local government polls was not a reflection of the electorates' desires. Iyayi, who delivered a lecture titled: "Electoral Malpractices and the Future of Democracy in Nigeria," observed that the system where INEC members are card-carrying members of the ruling political party is a bad signal for the nation's democracy. INEC Chairman, Dr. Abel Guobadia, who chaired the general practice session at the on-going conference, had little to say as the subject of INEC's failure was reechoed. Iyayi held that the arrangement where INEC and the ruling party are more or less entwined robs, this is not its role as an umpire in the electoral process. He said no member of the commission should be allowed to belong to any political party. Human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana, condemned the arrangement where a sitting president is allowed to contest election without resigning from office adding that such an arrangement would always create room for malpractices in the system.
