Gombe Flood Kills 15, Destroys 1,500 Houses
From Saka Ibrahim in Gombe

Committee on Gombe Flood which occurred at the weekend has disclosed that 15 people died and 1,500 houses destroyed, just as Governor Dan-juma Goje approved the release of N150 million to resettle the flood victims.

Chairman of the Commi-ttee and Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr David Albashi while submitting its report to Governor Goje said the last Friday/Saturday heavy downpour had caused a lot of havoc.

According to him, 434 families are presently displaced in the state capital and its environs.

He said the property and animals with over N1 billion were destroyed by the flood.

Said Albashi "your excellency apart from the 15 people who died, we have discovered that about 1,500 houses were affected out of which 434 families were completely displaced. We need at least N150 million to resettle the displaced persons."

The commissioner urged the Federal Government to come to the aid of the flood victims, adding that the committee had discovered that there was serious gully erosion in Gombe which requires urgent attention.

SHe advised the Federal Government to send team of engineers who will work with state engineers to map out good drainage system for Gombe and its environs as a way of preventing future occurrence.

The commissioner disclosed that Gombe erosion needs at least N6 billion which is beyond the financial capability of the state.

The governor in his response described flood disaster as an act of God.

He directed the release of the N130 million to the committee for the resettlement of the affected people.

The governor ordered the committee to ensure that relief materials got to the affected people latest by Thursday.

He urged the committee to be fair and just in the distribution of the materials.
