FG Sets Up Committee On Hajj From Josephine Lohor in Abuja Federal Government is to set up a committee headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido to advise on the best methods of conducting successful hajj operations for Nigerians. President Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking while receiving the Hajj 2004 Report from the Amirul Hajj, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, Speaker of the House of Representatives, said steps must be taken quickly to build on the excellent work of the 2004 Hajj Committee. The President said government must provide facilities for "our deserving citizens to perform their religious obligations in comfort and convenience," adding that the report of the committee would help in this regard. Accepting a recommendation that more carriers be involved in the airlift of pilgrims, the President said part of the reform process of the administration was the introduction of competition in the provision of services to government, in order to make people perform. Obasanjo commended the Hajj 2004 Amirul Hajj for a successful exercise and expressed the hope that future exercises would be even more successful. Earlier, Masari told the president that the Saudi authorities had awarded a medal to the committee for its performance, which he attributed to early preparations. he stated that none of the 51,065 pilgrims spent more than 22 days in the holy land.
