Minister Satisfied with Lagos Shoreline Project
By Justice Ilevbare
Minister for Inter-governmental Affairs, Youth Devel-opment and Special Duties, Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr, has described the level of work done by contractors handling both the Lagos shoreline and Five Cowrie projects as satisfactory.
Nweke said this after an inspection tour of the projects in Lagos State, adding that work on the shoreline is 98.5 per cent complete, and that September, which is the expected time of completion is a reality.
The minister, who rode on speed boat in company of the contractors during the tour said: "I am quite happy with what I have seen. The Lagos shoreline protection work is almost completed. I think they have done well. So I believe we are on schedule. in another one month or so, the work should be completed."
He said government is already looking at the areas which have not been contracted out, saying "very shortly, decisions would be taken in that respect."
According to Nweke, the Federal Government embarked on the project owing to the fact that Lagos is a commercial centre of Nigeria and protection of the shoreline is tantamount to protecting the economy of Nigeria. It is a very strategic project because if you do not protect the shoreline, then Victoria Island could be in danger, the entire Marina could be submerged and we don't want that," he said.
He said at his last inspection of the projects, he observed that the bridge piers on the independence bridge linking Marina with Awolowo road and Ahmadu Bello Way were largely exposed, which prompted government to quickly award the contract to arrest the situation.
According to the minister, theproject was awarded for N2.2 billion, while the Lagos Cowrie Creek project was awarded for N2.9 billion, adding that government has pumped in that kind of money because of the strategic importance of Lagos State.
He said the five cowrie creek in Lagos separates Lagos Island from Victoria Island. It is one of the two channels connecting Lagos lagoon to the Atlantic ocean. The five cowrie project creek erosion control currently handled by Julius Berger Nig. Plc, arose as a result of the devastating erosion of the riverbed that seriously compromised the integrity of the shoreline defence structure along the bridge piers across the creek.
