Robbers Kill 8 Policemen From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City At least eight members of the Edo State Police Command were killed by gunmen suspected to be armed bandits on a reprisal attack mission against the police in the state. The gunmen, numbering about six, were reportedly dressed in bullet-proof vests bearing police insignia, thereby confusing the policemen who were killed in their surveillance car. Confirming the report, police authorities said policemen who survived the deadly attacks are now lying criticall ill in various hospitals in Benin. AK-47 rifles were used, as evidenced from the expended ammunition found at the scenes of the incident, the authorities said, in an official statement, which referred to it as "Black night for Edo State Police Command." The killings were said to have taken place at Ugbowo and Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi Road, both in the state capital, at about 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Three policemen were reportedly killed at Ugbowo-Lagos Road area while five others were killed at Ikpoba Hill. Police spokesman, Fatai Kinyomi, who was practically in tears as he narrated the ordeal, said the Ikpoba Hill incident occurred shortly after signals went out to other locations that there had been an attack at Ugbowo. Also in Ekpoma, suspected assassins, yesterday, walked into a neighbnourhood and killed a young businessman in cold blood. The incident took place at about 10.30 a.m., THISDAY learnt. Kinyomi said reprisal attack could not be ruled out, especially against the backdrop of the successes recorded by the command against men of the underworld, but assured, "this is an unpalatable sacrifice fro a command, and, we will not rest on our oars; it is just a matter of days before those behind this heinous crime are brought to book.
