ASUU Accuses Obasanjo of High Handedness
From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado-Ekiti

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has accused President Olusegun Obasanjo of introducing obnoxious bills to the National Assembly as a way of forcing his will on the people.

At a press conference organised by the Ilorin Zone of the union comprising six universities, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, ASUU described the controversial Labour Bill, the Essential Services Bill and Press Enhancement Bill as indication that the present government is not ready to utilise dialogue and collective bargaining in addressing the nation's problems.

According to Dr. Eddy Olanipekun, coordinator of the Ilorin Zone who addressed the press, all the anti-masses bills have combined effect of decentralisation of unions, outlawing collective bargaining, outlawing strikes and violating our rights to freedom of association, life, speech and security.

"We, therefore call on Nigerians and organisations particularly, the NBA, NUJ and NMA to caution this government. The struggle of ASUU is not for students alone but for all Nigerians in view of the magnitude of problems confronting us", he said.
