Surgery Begins for Edo Kerosene Fire Victims

A team of medical experts from the United States of America (USA), has arrived Edo State to begin the process of conducting plastic surgery for the first batch of the 2001 kerosene fire victims in the state.
At least 45 of the worst cases, have been on admission for the operation expected to last about two weeks, at the Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital, Okada, Ovia North-east Local Government, when THISDAY visited.
A case of acid attack, 15-year old Miss Uwaila Clifford, alegedly bathed with acid for refusing marriage proposal of a middle aged man, is among patients slated for the operation.
The patients are the first batch of beneficiaries under a special partnership between Edo State Government and BEARS Foundation, headed by renowned body enhancer, Miss Modupe Ozolua.
The team of medical personnel is made up of four doctors (surgeons) and four nurses from Berverly Hills, California, USA, as well as the BEARS Foundation boss, Modupe.
They are joined by four surgeons and four nurses from the Igbinedion Hospital, including the University's Dean, Medical School and Head of Surgery Department, Professor Lawrence Chiedozi, and Dr. Sam Ukponmwan.
The head of the team from USA, Dr. Alex Kinun, assured of the preparedness of the doctors to do the very best possible for the patients, who are being accompanied by one relative that would be accommodated.
The male and female victims who are aged between eight and 54 years, expressed the hope that they would be able to integrate socially and economically after surgery.
Speaking to newsmen after being conducted round the wards by Ozolua and the medical team, the state Commissioner of Health, Mr Godwin Ovbiagele, advised the people to leave politics out of the exercise and support government in its moral and humanitarian gesture.
The project is expected to gulp N106 million out of which N25 million has been deposited by government.
