Darfur: PDP Chieftain Commends Obasanjo
Lagos
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Hope Uzodinmma, (Onwa), has commended President Olusegun Obasanjo for deploying Nigeria soldiers to the Darfur region in western Sudan to restore peace in the crisis-ridden area.
The Federal Government has deployed 1,000 soldiers to the region to join forces from some African countries to complement the Sudanese security to restore peace in Darfur. The region has been engulfed in crisis which lead to a full scale war about a year ago.
Uzodimma told journalists in Lagos that Nigeria as the giant of Africa cannot afford to watch a fellow African country in crisis without intervening to bring about peace.
Besides, he said, Obasanjo who with his tract record, has now joined the league of respectable world leaders, has further demonstrated his love for mankind and a crisis-free world, especially in Africa.
He noted that Africa, because of pockets of crisis and violence, has regrettably earned the reputation of the "problem child" of the world which all African leaders must join force to change.
The politician who thanked the National Assembly for approving the deployment of the troops said the harmonious working relationship between the two arms of government would eliminate unnecessary skirmishes and engender development.
Uzodinmma who also spoke on some vital national issues, decried the manner politicians jostle for positions ahead 2007 which could over heat the policy.
He urged politicians to evolve ways to better the lot of Nigerians. "I candidly believe that it is too early to begin to talk about 2007. Our roads are bad, healthcare facilities in a shambles because of long years of military dictatorship while thousands are dying of hunger. Our politicians should join the Federal Government to bring succour to the populace and establish a road map for the nation to attain greatness."
