Education Ministry Staff Protest Deductions FCT Staff of the Federal Ministry of Education yesterday protested deductions made from their monthly salaries. The workfers complained that aside from their salaries being delayed for the past few months, the Ministry had been deducting their housing and transport allowances, while their three months monetization due were yet to be paid. The staff claimed that while the ministry keeps complaining lack of money, directors in the ministry, who constituted the 60 people sent on visitation exercise to the 61 government-owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria were paid N15,000 per night allowances for the 30-day duration of the assignment. They wondered where the Ministry got N450,000 for each of the 60 members totaling N270 million. They urged the Minister to wade into the matter and ensure they are paid their N150 million outstanding salaries. While addressing the staff, Professor Phabian Osuji pleaded with them for patience, assuring that he would look into their complains. The minister however urged the workers to present their grievances in a documented to enable him study and address them appropriately. He explained that he had received similar complains from the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, which he was already addressing. He said the Ministry of Finance made a mistake of deducting both 7.5 and 12.5 per cent of both the workers contribution and the Federal Government's contribution towards the contributory pension scheme.
