Ngige Installed Catholic Church Patron
Anambra
Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State has become the first serving public officer in Nigeria to be made a Grand Patron of the Catholic Church, the highest honour for a lay member of the Church.
This is as a result of his installation as Grand Patron of the Catholic Church in Ihiala at a ceremony performed at the 10th anniversary of the Christ the King Parish, Umuezeawala, Ihiala by the Archbishop Emeritus of the Onitsha Archdiocese, Most Rev Dr Albert Obiefuna who led a number of priests.
Ngige was elevated to the status of grand patron after an ad hoc committee which critically examined his leadership of the state since May,2003, and his standing in matters of faith and morals turned in a favourable report.
At his homily at the Pontifical Mass, Archbishop Obiefuna who is the most senior bishop in the state congratulated the governor on meeting the high standards of the Church.
He criticized some unnamed politicians for attempting to meddle in Church affairs, a veiled reference to the widely publicised public statement by a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Chuma Nzeribe, in which he warned the Archbishop against installing Dr Ngige a Church Patron. The Ihiala people later publicly apologised to the septuagenarian bishop for Nzeribe's conduct.
The installation was attended by top Church and government officials, the traditional rulers of Ihiala and neighbouring towns, as well as people from different walks of life.
In a speech on behalf of Ihiala people and their traditional ruler in council, the President General of the Ihiala Progress Union, Chuks Nsobundu who is a former Commissioner for Works in Anambra State, said that the "time has come for the recall of Chuma Nzeribe from the National Assembly for his pathological fetish practices and for bringing shame upon shame to our people". Mr Nsobundu received intermittent ovations from the excited large crowd.
A visibly delighted Dr Ngige promised to repair comprehensively the dilapidated Federal Government-owned Okija Junction-Ihiala- Uli Road which connects Anambra and Imo states and terminates at Ahoada in the Rivers State. Since the road was constructed in 1982, it has not been repaired, leading to its present messy state.
