Falcons, Lady Tigers Get Return Dates
Stories from Emeka Enechi and Pius Ayinor in Athens
After hectic seat search processes in Athens, the Super Falcons and Lady Tigers are set to leave Athens for Lagos. The female footballers are scheduled to leave Greece today while the basketballers would depart tomorrow by their various schedules.
An official of Team Nigeria confirmed to
THISDAYSports that the Falcons have had their seats confirmed following the arrangements began since they lost the quarter finals game to world champions Germany Friday.
"They (Falcons) will leave tomorrow. It is now certain as their bookings have been confirmed," he said.
By the arrangements, the Falcons will fly through Germany aboard a Lufthansa flight while the basketballers who are mainly United States based are going aboard British Airways via London.
The Falcons, whom we learnt are billed for a reception in Lagos later in the week, are virtually going home as a group. For the basketballers, it's slightly different as majority of the players are going back to the United States. Most of them who only played for the country for the first time joined the team at the German camp.
The departure programme has remained a hectic one for many of the athletes and visitors to the Games. Despite the increased number of flights for the period by the airlines, securing a seat in and out of the Greek capital city has remained tough. Although entry to the city slightly reduced by weekend, it is on the rise again as many holiday seekers troop in for the Games' closing ceremony on Sunday.
An unidentified KLM female official told us on phone the pressure could go down from mid next week.
"For now, our seats remain fully booked in and out of
Athens until Wednesday (September 1st). Coming in was a few percent lighter by weekend but we are fully loaded this period," she said.
For some other countries departures have begun. Some members of the Korean delegation left on Tuesday while some
Chinese are leaving today.
