Nigeria Makes Olympic History Germany 2006: Jamaica, U.S. Eye History
  • Wins Africa's first basketball game
From Emeka Enechi and Pius Ayinor in Athens

The female national Basketball team, the Lady Tigers yesterday celebrated a classification match victory over Korea.

The African champions won the match 68-64 and indeed had more than enough to celebrate as the victory was the first win for an African female team at the Olympic Games.

Athens 2004 marked Nigeria's first appearance in this lovely game developed by the Americans. Before the Lady Tigers made history, the African flag had been carried variously by Congo (Zaire) and Senegal in the female event.

The Nigerian ladies, who were rated higher than they have performed here, started on a heart-beating note for their supporters as the Asians caught up with them at the end of the first quarter when scores stood at 16-16. The Koreans returned and took the challenge powerfully taking the lead with 10 points before it was caught to 32-29 but still in their favour at the break.

The second half brought back the Tigers to their preview rating and held sway to victory on just one occasion when their opponents took a very brief one point lead.

Mfon Udoka at small forward position for Nigeria was again man or woman of the match. She hit 21 points to lead on both sides and grabbed 10 rebounds. Mobolaji Akiode was good play under the basket yesterday and complimented that effort with a championship high 15 points and six rebounds. Nguveren Iyorhe shot 11 points but Aisha Mohammed had the strongest inside presence and grabbed the boards 13 times in proof and complementary to her eight points.

"Whichever way it has come, it was good victory for us. We needed it," Mfon said afterwards.

The victory means Nigeria finished at the 11th position while Korea took the rear position. China defeated Japan for the 9th and 10th positions.
