Athletes Grumble Over Games Training Grant From Emeka Enechi and Pius Ayinor in Athens Indications emerged yesterday on reasons why Nigeria performed woefully at the on going games in Athens. Investigations by THISDAYsports reveal that athletes lacked the will and push to win medals due to lack of monetary incentives by the Nigerian government. Some athletes, who spoke with THISDAYsports under anonimity, said it was wrong for government to have denied them the usual training grants, which they said acted as a form of motivation. They argued that even when the government had arranged the tour and European camping, it would have still gone ahead to provide them the grants. "We cannot change their programme but they would have known that it was wrong to have stopped the grant without due consultation with athletes. The elite athletes have their own private coaches who equally have their own programmes for athletes. You don't just wake any day and ask them to abandon whatever programme they have mapped out for their athletes and move into an organised camping with a different programme altogether. There is no gain saying the fact that it affected us and it showed in our performance," an athlete said last night.While some of the medal hopefuls including Uchenna Emedolu, Deji Aliu, Endurance Ojokolo, and Mary Onyali crashed out of their respective events, due mainly to injury, others performed below their strengths and were equally shown the way out in their fields.Former African female table tennis queen Bose Kaffo announced her retirement from international competitions on Monday, though, it was uncertain at press time if she left the international stage due to this development.
