WEMPCO Appeals to Cross River for Second Chance
From Amby Uneze in Calabar
The Western Metal Processing Company Limited (WEMPCO), a Chinese Hong-Kong muiltinational wood processing company on the banks of the Cross River in Ikom, Cross River State has appealed to the state government of Cross River to rescind her earlier decision by calling them back to resume operations as they have promised to amend their shotcomings.
Cross River State Government had recently sacked WEMPCO from further carrying logging operations in the state due to what it described as unwholesome activities contrary to the earlier agreement reached with the company.
It was observed that another body, the Rainforest Resouce and Development Centre (RRDC), a non-governmental organisation based in the state had waged a war against the "illegal logging activities and tax evasion" by WEMPCO.
Stating its case in a media briefing over the weekend, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, Consultant to WEMPCO and the Company's Public Relations unit led by Asima Asima and Mashal Okongo respectively debunked ever being involved in illegal logging, adding that their logging was in line with the concession given to them the state government.
The trio added that apart from the rippling effect the sack has caused to numerous citizens of the state, the economy of the state has also being affected negatively.
They contended that the idea of sacking a foreign firm will affect the investment opportunities which the state has been championing, especially in line with the promotion of tourism in the state, stressing that the worries of the state government has been addressed and promised not to disappoint this time arround.
According to them, the company has over 1,500 staff in her employ. as most of them come from the state, who are now suffering from lack of employment while their families will drastically be affected.
"Government should try to reconsider the ban and look at the ripple effect the ban will have on the economy of the state. WEMPCO is ready to move most of its finished products into the state. WEMPCO is also willing to enter into pro-active community and press relations", WEMPCO agents said.
