Oyo to Get N270m Agric Loans By Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan Oyo State government has earmarked a sum of N270 million as soft loan to farmers in the state for this year's farming season and animal production. The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Alalade, who disclosed this in Ibadan, also said that N17 million worth of cash crop seedlings will be distributed free of charge to farmers, corporate bodies and other organisations. According to the commissioner, the state government will not relent in its efforts to realise its Agric and Industrial revolution in the state. Alalade also disclosed that young school leavers would be encouraged by the government to engage in farming as a means to alleviate poverty and boost food production. He explained that although most farmers in the state are old people but young school leavers are being satirised to go into cash crops planting such as cocoa, oil palm, cashew, cassava and other allied crops. Said he: "we are doing this in the realisation of the fact that the old Western Region was the hub of Cocoa productions, we are determined to bring back the old glory through the enewagement of the new breed farmers in the state". According to him, the amount of N270 million will be distributed to farmers as soft loan for the effective take off of this year's planing season and also for animal production. "the loan will assist peasant farmers who really need the money to maintain their farm land." Alalade also said that 8,650 metric tonnes of fertilizers have been procured by the state government to be sold to farmers at subsidized rates."
