FG sacks 70 FCT ministry, FCDA directors

The Federal Government on Tuesday began the downsizing ofits
workforce by sacking more than 70 directors from the Federal CapitalTerritory
(FCT) Ministry and its parastatal, the Federal Capital DevelopmentAuthority
(FEDA).
The FCT ministry is one of five ministries and
agenciesselected as pilot scheme for government reform programme. The others
ministriesare finance, information and national orientation, the Presidency and
thenational planning commission.
The coordinating Executive Secretary of the FEDA, Mr.
SaniAlhassan, said a total of 130 of the authority�s workforce were affectedin
the purge.
A breakdown showed that 55 directors were affected in
theFEDA. Seven are directors on salary grade level 17, 18 are deputy directors
and30 assistant directors. The
exactnumber of management and senior staff sacked from the FCT ministry could
not beascertained. Ministry officials said only the Head of Service of
theFederation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, could publicise the information.
However, ministry sources put the number of management
andsenior staff affected at �a little more than 20�.
Daily Independent also saw a list containing 73 names ofmainly
clerical, secretarial and junior staff that have been directed tocollect their
letters from central administration registry.
Though Alhassan claimed ignorance of this, theministry�s
Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kingsley Agha, said those on thelist would be
deployed to other departments.
Alhassan said those affected would take home their
benefitsas contained in the Public Officers (Special Provisions) Act of the
CivilService rules, adding that it was in line with the National
EconomicEmpowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS).
