Dabengwa, has said his immediate task is to grow and improve the quality of the
network.
Mr. Dabengwa, who was previously

Nigeria.
He will retain his position as
the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the MTN Group based in South Africa and
would be bringing considerable operational expertise to the Nigerian operation,
which is in urgent need of expansion to meet the overwhelming consumer demand.
Given Nigeria’s challenging
operational environment and the maturing market in South Africa, MTN Group
expects the deployment of the new CEO to yield positive results for the company
and its customers as it continues its upward growth curve.

to expedite the deployment and improve the quality of our network, to acquire
and grow our customer base and to improve the productivity and efficiency of our
organisation."

contributions made by his predecessor, Mr Adrian Wood, and the executive team,
Mr Dabengwa said through his energetic leadership and commitment to MTN’s core
values, Wood has helped to establish MTN Nigeria not only as the clear leader in
its sector, but indeed as the recognised brand in Nigeria today. It is now our
collective challenge to build on this solid foundation and carry MTN Nigeria to
new heights. It is indeed a great honour and privilege for me to have the
opportunity to lead such a fine organisation as this stage of its phenomenal
development."
Group CEO, Mr Phuthuma Nhleko who
spoke on the occasion said: the location of our COO in Nigeria, in his dual
capacity, is indicative of the significance of MTN Nigeria for the MTN Group.
Mr. Dabengwa brings considerable operational expertise to our Nigerian
operation, which is in urgent need of expansion to meet consumer demand."
"The group is confident
that, given the challenging operational environment in Nigeria and the maturing
market in South Africa, these developments will yield positive results for the
company and its customers as it continues its upward growth curve," he
added.
Mr. Dabengwa, who holds bachelor
and masters degrees joined MTN as Managing Director on August 1, 1999 reporting
directly to MTN Group Chief Executive.
