CNPP plans coalition against PDP in 2007 From John-Abba Ogbodo, Abuja
THE Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has come out with a plan for its members to form a coalition against the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007.
Its chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, who disclosed this in a telephone chat after the meeting of the coalition's Central Working Committee in Abuja on Monday, said unless urgent steps were taken to checkmate the PDP, there was every tendency of sliding into absolute dictatorship.
He said because of that, CNPP would mobilise all other political parties to form a coalition against PDP in the 2007 elections.
Besides, Musa said CNPP would join forces with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to ensure that the Trade Unions Amendment bill, which is before the National Assembly did not see the light of the day.
He also disclosed that a committee to restructure the CNPP had been set up under the leadership of Alhaji Wada Nas as way of strengthening the conference.
Another committee to embark on electoral reform was also formed under the chairmanship of one David Ukaeje of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Meanwhile, the leader of the Alliance for Democracy in the House of Representatives, Wumi Bewaji has condemned the recent purported meeting of the Pan Yoruba Group, where Moyosoluwa Akinfenwa was allegedly endorsed as national chairman of the party. Bewaji said for such an action to be taken at a time when arrangements were on to reconcile both sides at a unity convention showed that there was a motive on the part of some people to worsen the situation.
He said the attempt to endorse Akinfenwa against Chief Bisi Akande was a re-enactment of what such individuals did between late Chief Bola Ige and Olu Falae.
