First generation politicians started godfatherism —UJO

By Emeka Mamah
Friday, August 27, 2004

Kaduna— Former Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kaduna State, Professor Abdulhameed Ujo has said that godfatherism in the country’s politics started with Nigeria’s first generation of leaders. Ujo said it was wrong to believe that Godfatherism started with the incidents in Anambra where Governor Chris Ngige is embroiled in a crises with his so-called godfather, Chief Chris Uba; Kwara State or oven in Oyo State where Governor Ladoja was shogging it out with Chief Lamidi Adedibu. He spoke at the on-going seminar on free and fair elections in Kaduna. Ujo is currently the Director of the International Institute for the study of Election and Election Management Department of Political Science University of Abuja.

In a paper entitled “Free and Fair Election in Nigeria, An unresolved Agenda”, Prof Ujo traced the problems militating against the conduct of free and fair elections in the country to enthicity, violence, godfatherism and institutionalisation. “Recent developments in electoral politics in Nigeria has brought to light, the factor of godfatherism. The impression being created that godfatherism emerged during the 2003 election is wrong. “Godfatherism started in the 1960s. Nigeria’s first generation leaders were godfathers.

Their anointed sons always won elections; otherwise, how could a stanger win an election in Tiv land during the First Republic. “Intra-ethnic competition is usually anchored on gadfatherism since ethnicity could not be used. Examples of this include developments during the 2003 elections in Kwara [where Dr. Olusola Saraki installed his son; Bukola as governor], Anambra and Oyo States.
