MASSOB stay at home order successful in Anambra

By Anayo Okoli
Friday, August 27, 2004

AWKA — COMMERCIAL activities were totally brought to a halt in Anambra State yesterday following the stay-at-home order issued to Ndigbo by the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) which was obeyed by the people. The streets of Awka, the state capital, Onitsha the commercial city and Nnewi, the industrial city of the state were completely deserted. Banks, markets including the popular Onitsha Main Market, and other major busy markets in Awka and Nnewi were closed. Even street shops in these cities and other areas like Ekwuluobia, Umunze, Agulu, Oko, Ufuma, Nkpor and Abagana were also closed against customers.

Government offices in Awka witnessed skeletal services as most civil servants obeyed the stay-at-home order and stayed at home.
Amidst the success of the directive, the Anambra State Police Command issued a statement urging the people to ignore the MASSOB directive describing it as “unconstitutional and deceitful.” The command in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Kolapo Shafoluwe (ASP)urged the people to ignore the call which it said was to create “unwarranted panic” on the people.

"The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the good citizens of Anambra State once more to ignore the call for a public holiday/stay- at-home order issued by the so-called MASSOB members. The call is unconstitutional, deceitful and is aimed at creating unwarranted panic on the good people of this state. By this announcement, members of the public are enjoined to go about their lawful business as the Police Command has taken good steps to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.”
