Restructure Nigeria now —
Bode George
Ayodele Oni,

WORRIED
by the uneven distribution of local councils and states between the North and
South, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Vice-chairman (South-west) Chief
Olabode George has called for an overhaul of the country’s federalism.
Chief George noted that the reform should
be carried out such that it would be fair to all parts of the country.
The PDP chieftain spoke in Akure, Ondo
State, yesterday, while presenting a keynote address at the meeting of the
party’s chairmen in the Southern states.
"One major area of our national life,
which cannot escape attention, is the way our federation is currently
structured", he said.
"I am aware that the distribution of local
government councils is a major concern in the South and I dare say the
distribution of states as well.
"We must continue to work at getting a
distribution pattern which follows the logic of demography, rather than that of
political power", he noted.
The PDP chieftain said local governments
were presently products of arbitrariness, rather than objective considerations.
He charged the PDP state chairmen to
ensure the stability of the nascent democracy by continuing to manage its
affairs effectively.
Chief George, a retired Naval Commodore,
also defended the participation of retired military officers in politics, saying
they were merely exercising their democratic right.
According to him, in developed democracies
past service in the military and para-military were badges of honour in politics
and not marks of condemnation.
"Service in military or paramilitary
organisations is not different from service in other professions and we are
talking of retired, not serving, officers", he added.
Chief George charged the PDP state
chairmen to remain just and fair during the party’s national convention next
year in order to strengthen democracy.
