Additional report by Joe Agulanna, (Night Editor) in Lagos. CHIEF Bayo Ojo (SAN) last night in Abuja, emerged as the new Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president. He polled 506 votes to beat the other three contestants, Alhaji Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), 214; Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), 268; and Chief Philip Umeh, 41. Interestingly, the new president, Ojo, handed over the chairmanship of the Kwara NBA to the outgoing president, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) years back. The election, which is the high point of the 2004 annual conference of the association, was almost marred by violence as a group loyal to a leading candidate, Chief Philip Umeh, protested the presence of unaccredited delegates at the event. Loyalists to Umeh claimed that unauthorised persons were smuggled in and allowed to vote. However, accreditation started at 10.00 a.m. amid rowdiness as several delegates openly complained of their names not appearing in the register.
