Ripples As Motion On Okija Shrine Debuts
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja
Legislative activities on the floor of the House of Representatives turned rowdy yesterday following the decision by Hon Mba Ajah to back down on his earlier motion on Okija shrine.
Ajah, who was invited by the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari to move the motion declined to do so citing pressure from his people from South-east.
After the Speaker called on Ajah to move his motion, the floor became quiet following the expectations of members to hear what Ajah was going to say on the matter.
"I have been under immense pressure to withdraw the motion by my people from the South East so I move to stand it down", Ajah intoned.
Reacting immediately, Hon Mao Ohuabunwa challenged Ajah to say what he meant to and not to hide under the an alleged pressure to back down, adding, "Let not Ajah say he is under pressure, he sponsored the motion alone and if he is withdrawing it let him not say that it is due to pressure. We know some members would not have been here if they were not taken to any shrine".
At this Juncture, the South East Caucus Leader, Hon Gilbert Nnaji intervened and told the House that as the head of the lawmakers from the South East geo political zone, he had to speak for them. He said that since Ajah had made his position known, he should be allowed his rights of backing out of the motion.
The Chief Whip of the house, Hon Bawa Bwari said that from responses from members of the South East zone, the handwriting on the wall was clear and that they no longer wanted to go ahead with the motion.
Hon Independence Ogunewe warned that there was need for Ajah to be very clear in his position, as the way he was handling the matter was capable of being misrepresented given the publicity the Okija issue has generated in the press.
He urged Ajah to explain what he meant by pressure and who was pressurizing him.
