Labour Reform Bill Passage May Ground Economy - Oshiomhole From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja Nigeria Labour Congress President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has warned members of the National Assembly not to approve the Labour Reform Bill now before them, arguing that doing so may lead to the grounding of the nation's economy. Oshiomhole who who spoked with journalists at National Assembly, Abuja warned that people who make bad laws often fall victim to such instruments, citing the Electoral Law 2002 as example. On the issue of the use of strike against the country's economy the labour leader pointed out that he as a person does not declare strikes, explaining that once Nigerian workers decide on any action, as a leader, he would have no option than to implement it. The labour leader denied getting any personal benefit from the way labour is structured, and derided those aiming to break up the union, noting that while others complain about bad policies of government and go to sleep, labour follows such complaints to their logical conclusion. "What government is doing is rationalizing what they are doing, that is that these laws were made under the military. But the constitution we are using, was it not made by the military Decrees? Why only the Trade unions Act? If you want to rationalize anything we will find ways to rationalize it but I am sure that Nigerians are not deceived on why we are being oppressed," he said. He denied that he was the issue in the NLC case as he had suffered several detentions even during the military era and counseled the lawmakers to protect the interest of the masses.
