AD: Akinfenwa Faction Waves Olive Branch
From Chuks Okocha in Abuja
Chief Bisi Akande led faction of the Alliance for Demo-cracy (AD) has extended hands of friendship to the Senator Moji Akinfenwa group.
However, the Akinfenwa group, said it is being blackmailed because of its principled stand that the party is not a sectional are, but a national party.
Addressing caucus members of his faction in Abuja yesterday, Akinfenwa denied being sponsored by anyone nor receiving financial assistance for the purpose of betraying the party.
He said that his only offence is standing his ground as a former leader of the party in the senate against those who tried to portray the party as sectional, a position which created some enemies for him.
" I believe the AD is a National Party and therefore, I stood my ground when I was in the National Assembly against those who wanted to turn AD into a sectional party. I do not believe in sectionalising AD, AD is a national party."
He said that he has been vindicated by the recent pronouncement of the pan Yoruba organisation Afenifere, recognising his faction as the authentic group.
Akinfenwa commended the courage and determination of Afenifere in arriving at the decision which he said has gone a long way in bringing about unity in the crisis-ridden party.
The factional leader insisted that Akande remains one of his best friends and called on the former governor of Osun State to return to the main fold of the party in the overall interest of the Yoruba nation. Zonal leaders and delegates from the South-east and South-south endorsed the position of Afenifere on the Akinfenwa faction.
South-east leader, Dr. Perry Iloegunam and his colleague from the South-south, Deacon Efosa Edoma said the caucuses never belonged to the Lagos group led by Chief Akande.
Also, leader of the Northern caucus, Alhaji Mohammed Makaranta, who is also the deputy national chairman hailed the courage and sense of purpose of the Afenifere in recognising the Akinfenwa faction as the authentic group.
