NUJ Plans to Pull Out of NLC

As battle between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the new Labour Reform Bill rages on, leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has finalised arrangement to pull out of the NLC.
The NUJ President, Prince Smart Adeyemi, dropped the hint at Ada, Osun State yesterday while speaking at the first All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC).
He said the development was to reposition NUJ, to become a formidable professional body that would be the pride of all, rather than being a labour union.
Adeyemi said "since the NUJ remains the central union of practising journalists, you cannot pretend to be unconcerened about the struggles by some of us to re-direct the affairs of the NUJ for growth and development.
He said "already, we have identified about eight clauses of the NUJ constitution that will enable us to fully become a professional body."
"We hope to convey a constitutional conference before the end of the year where all stakeholders will join hands with the NUJ to reform our profession".
While commending the Nigeria Guild of Editors for organising the conference, Adeyemi said NUJ had made a recommendation in one bill it sent to the National Assembly on welfare package for editors.
He said,"the indulgence of hiring and firing editors at will must stop, so as to enhance the practice of journalism.
Adeyemi then called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to back up his economic reforms with political reforms, so as to ensure good governance in the nation.
Earlier, NGE National President, Alhaji Halilu Baba Dantiye, said the theme of the conference, "Ethics, Professionalism and the Nigeria Editor", was designed to equip editors on their day to day professional practice and conduct.
He said the conference was the first to be organised since the Guild was established about 40 years ago, adding that "the editors would continue to promote and support policies and programmes that will better the lives of the ordinary man in whatever part of the country they may be."
