Group Warns Youth Against Terrorising Oil Companies From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Urhobo ethnic group in Delta State, has warned youth in oil producing areas of the state against the practice of terrorising multi-national oil companies, saying such acts would only worsen the problem of mass unemployment. President-General of the organisation, Chief Benjamin Okumagba, gave the advice while inaugurating the youth wing of the UPU, known as the Ukoko r'Okugbe r'Ighele r'Urhobo and condemned the attitude of some youth who use the platform of community based organisations to pressurise oil firms to recruit indigenes as ghost workers. According to him, the motive was to enable such youth draw monthly salaries without working, while denying hundreds of others who are ready to work the opportunity of being gainfully employed. He condemned the proliferation of youth organisations across Urhobo andsaying the state government's ban on youth organisations is still inforce stressing that the ban may not be unconnected with the violent and unruly manner such groups were being run. He, however, distinguished between the youth organisations and the newly inaugurated Ukoko r'Okugbe r'Ighele r'Urhobo, which he said was designed to serve as a link between the elders council and the youth. "I want to state here that elections into this intermediate council would have been done some years ago but while plans were on, some Urhobo kings and chiefs expressed fear of uncertainty. They expressed fears of possible unruly behaviour of youth who always usurp powers given to them and forcefully dethrone elders.
