Lagos to Relocate Oko-Baba Sawmillers

People of Oko-Baba in Lagos Mainland and its environs will soon heave a sigh of relief, as the state government has concluded plans to relocate the Saw Millers from Oko-baba to Ejirin, in Epe Local Government Area.
Ejirin, is being given a face lift, interms of provision of potable water, expansion of rural electrification, building of low cost housing, health centres and recreational facilities to accommodate more than 1,000 saw millers that may shift base to the community.
In a media tour organised by the Inter-ministerial Committee on the relocation of Oko-baba Saw Millers yesterday, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Environment, Alhaji Hakeem Gbajabiamila, who also served as chairman of the committee, with six other commissioners, explained that Lagos State Government is committed to relocating of the saw millers and cleaning-up the Ejirin water-way.
"As a matter of fact, if you look at the history of Oko-baba, you will know that the place originated from Ejirin. The people moved from Ejirin down to Lagos because they wanted to be close to where their business will boom. All the wood passes through Ejirin water way before getting to Lagos.
"The programme is not about how much the state government spent, but the ingenuity of the government to expand the state, which we must do now. If we keep on delaying, we will continue to have the problem of urban degradation. Therefore, no money spent in improving our environment would be too much. That is what this administration is committed to and we are championing it", Gbajabiamila said.
He said the new saw mill will begin operation within six to nine months from now. This, he said, has prompted government to work round the clock, at ensuring that facilities are put in place within the shortest time possible.
He stressed that in the future, government will get the involvement of other international bodies that will be converting saw dust generated from the mills into energy, which will augment NEPA supply.
