FG Urged to Establish Emergency Fund
Ebonyi
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
Ebonyi State Government has called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, establish National Emergency Management Fund (NEMF)
The state Governor, Dr Sam Egwu, made this call when National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) donated over N10 million worth of relief materials, ranging from building materials, clothings, as well as food items to victims of disaster in six local government areas of the state recently.
Egwu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ozo Nweke Ozo, while presenting the materials at the government house, Abakaliki, said the establishment of such fund would enhance the activities of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to draw funds easily from NEMF to meet emergencies.
He called on the National Assembly to re-visit the recent Supreme Court Ruling which annulled the financial linkage between NEMA and the National Ecological Fund for which NEMA lost 20 per cent of its funding, arguing that the present situation also affected monthly ecological funds allocation to states.
He said it adversely affected NEMA's service delivery in general and promptness in responding to emergency.
The governor added that the establishment of NEMF is in the interest of Nigerians and for better service delivery.
Egwu commended NEMA officials for justifying its existence by responding to the distress call his state made, explaining that the importance of the agency cannot be over-emphasised, and charged officials to sustain the rapid response mechanism, knowing that disasters don't give notice.
He, therefore, called on the people to take precautionary measures to reduce occurrence of some avoidable disasters such as fire-outbreaks, buildings collapse and communal clashes, which are sometimes caused by carelessness and neglect of rules.
