Slok Air: NANS Seeks Obasanjo's Intervention
Lagos

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has appealed to President Olusegun Obasanjo to use his influence to ensure revalidation of the operating licence of Slok Air.
At a press conference at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, yesterday, addressed by its National President, Tony Okey Nwoye, NANS also demanded an immediate halt to the liquidation of Nigeria Airways.
It said it had embarked on an indepth investigation of the activities that led to the clampdown on Slok Air, and came to a conclusion that the best thing was to allow it to continue operation.
"The argument of the Minister for Aviation was initially based on the directive of the Presidency, which was later debunked by his Media Assistant, M.A. Ahmed, who blamed the revocation on professional advice of NCAA."
The NCAA claimed that Slok Air flew two aircraft in contravention of the provision of NCAA Act No 49 of 1999, the Civil Aviation Air Navigation Regulation (CAANR), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Standards and recommended Practice (SARP).
"Secondly, Slok Air was accused of having less than the required manpower for its four planes. These arguments were checkmated by Slok Air management, in a press statement issued on August 22, that the Presidency was briefed by the Ministry on how the firm breached safety and security standards.
"Also, on October 16, 2003, NCAA was informed on the need to add two aircraft to its fleet, which was given a nod, and by March 11, 2004, it was given approval to increase its fleet to six. On this basis, Slok Air made application to the NCAA with the payment of N80,000 as Operating Specification (OPSpecs) fee for the two aircraft after the required inspection has been carried out by nominated inspectors of NCAA at various points, by Mr A. I. Ajudah at San Antonio, California and Mr A. Adetu at Bucharest, Europe, for air worthiness clearance", NANS said.
