Oyinlola Advises Journalists on Professionalism

Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, yesterday called on journalists to perform their duties in a way that would earn them respect and credibility the discharge of their duties.
Oyinlola disclosed this at Ada, while declaring open the first All Nigeria Conference of Editors (NGE) held at MicCom Golf Hotel and Resort, Ada.
He said they should fashion out ways of promoting professionalism and other ideals of ethical journalism through their conduct, so as to function optimally.
Oyinola said the press should embark on continuous training and re-training of practitioners, to enhance performance and productivity.
He said "it is an established fact that a journalist that is untrained is worse off than his counterpart that is physically constrained.
His words, "It is highly imperative that factors contributing to low standards of performance in the journalism profession such as poor remuneration and lack of understanding of the rudiments of the profession should be seriously addressed not only by media managers but also by employers."
He enjoined the editors, as key players in gate-keeping functions to embark on a worthy re-examination of their functions, as well as measures that would make the profession a more honourable one.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion who is also the Chairman of Daar Communications Limited, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, said the media must be an agent of mobilisation for public good, moreso as it represents the conscience of the society.
He said, "the Nigerian media should address itself to bring free, peaceful, civil society and enhance the economic and political opportunities of the people".
Dokpesi, called on the editors to use the conference to address critical issues affecting the country and African continent, in order to reposition themselves as the true bastion of hope for the common man.
