Borno State government in its bid to improve rural potable water supply has bought five motorised water rigs with which boreholes are expected to be dug in all the local government areas within the state.
A statement from the Director press Mr. Usman Ali Chiroma, quoted the Commissioner of Urban and Rural Water Supply, Hon. Abubakar Kyari as stating that Governor Ali Modu Sheriff on assumption office had directed all boreholes in Maiduguri abandoned by past governments to be resuscitated.
Two of the rigs were bought in February from Italy by the state while the other three were bought from South Africa through a joint funding between the state and the local governments.
The rigs are to be used in digging boreholes in areas mostly located in the desert.
Already a crop of professionals from the state are undergoing training for the operations of the rigs and are expected to boost capacity building in the state.
To effectively provide water for the state, the governor converted the Borno State Water Corporation to the Ministry of Urban and Rural Water Supply while two agencies, Urban Water Board and Rural Water Supply have been created according to Kyari, about 280 submersive pumps and 15 generators per local government have been procured while abandoned water facilities have been resuscitated. The water treatment plant in Maiduguri functioned below capacity at about one million gallons a day but has been improved to pump over 10 million gallons a day.
In the health sector Chiroma stressed that from the N2.4 billion budgeted for the sector, government has paid in full about N137 million outstanding arrears owed workers which resulted in a protracted strike during the last dispensation, while hospitals and health related schools have been upgraded.
Prominent among them is the state Specialist Hospital that has been boosted with water supply, standby generator, and new ambulance and equipped the Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Theatre with about N1.1 million.
N30 million worth of drugs has also been procured from manufacturers through the drug-revolving scheme. N42 million expended in equipping the amenity ward at the state specialist hospital, while N2.1 million was spent on the procurement of drugs for quick response in case of a disease outbreak in the state.
