Egwu's Committed to Ebonyi Devt, Says Aide
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
Ebonyi State Government has said that Governor Sam Egwu's re-election has not in anyway slowed the pace of work and execution of developmental projects in the state, but has given impetus to actualizing its mission of improving the lots of Ebonyi people.
Addressing members of Correspondent Chapel, Ebonyi State chapter who paid him a courtesy visit in Abakaliki, the Personal Assistant to the state governor, Chief Collins Agbo, said the allegation that many state governors, who won second tenure elections have lost the vigour to carry out their duties in accordance to their mandate had no affect the governor, whom he said had outlined his administration's plans to bring development to the young state and has not deviated from it.
"The second tenure victory has even reinvigorated, Dr Sam Egwu to do more for Ebonyi people. The free and compulsory education, which the administration introduced in the first tenure, has not stopped.
"The construction of many major inter community roads are on-going, while others have been completed, and the administration is currently expanding and dualising four major township roads in Abakaliki metropolis. Go to the permanent site of Ebonyi State University and see that the faculty buildings are being completed. The administration is unrelenting in developing the state", Agbo said.
He urged journalists to be objective in their reporting, stating that the state government runs an open-door administration "and because it is a transparent government, there is no need to hide anything".
Agbo observed that biased reporting does not in anyway improve the journalism profession, adding that the last bastion of hope for the common man, the press should rise above sectionalism ands personal sentiments.
"Journalists should be above board because the society as a whole depend on their guidance, but looking at what has happened in the state it will not be fair to give journalists all the pas marks because sometimes their reports are biased. Look at a situation where cultists kill their members during one of their fights and journalists will attribute it to government. This is because they don't investigate well before reporting. This state has the least record of political killing in the federation, yet journalists would want to create an impression that such thing is happening in the state", he added.
Agbo also urged the leadership of the chapel, which was elected recently, to be transparent, accountable, responsible and enduring, decrying the frequent changes of the chapel's executive, saying that as enlightened citizens of the country, journalists should project the ideals of democracy in the way they run their affairs.
