BA Staff Shortages Impede Services Cancels more flights British Airways canceled a handful of flights Wednesday as staff shortages and technical hitches continued to impede the airline's services out of Heathrow Airport. The airline canceled 81 European and U.S. flights between Monday and Tuesday, stranding thousands of travelers at the height of the busy summer vacation period. The airline said services were largely back to normal and it hoped that the four flights dropped Wednesday to domestic destinations would be the last cancellations. It advised travelers to check the company Web site for information but said they should check in for flights as usual. The airline's problems began Monday afternoon when it canceled flights to Philadelphia, Chicago and New York because of technical problems with aircraft. Those cancellations, combined with staff shortages at the airline, had a domino effect, leading to the cancellations and delays of several more flights. The airline, which is recruiting more workers, said it was around 120 staff short at Heathrow. A spokesman said the airline was caught short by several staff members leaving unexpectedly at the beginning of the summer and large numbers away on sick leave. The airline last week headed off a strike planned for the Aug. 28-31 public holiday weekend in Britain by offering its baggage handlers and check-in staff more pay. Workers have complained they are underpaid and overworked, particularly during the busy summer vacation periods at Heathrow.
