Media executives have been enjoined to always embark on a worthy
re-examination of their functions and measures that would enhance the
profession.
Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, gave the charge on
Thursday while declaring open the first all Nigerian Editors Conference held in
Ada, Osun State.
He also urged them to open a new rebirth that would earn the
practitioners move respect and credibility in the discharge of their duties.
According to him, “I enjoin you to continue to fashion
out ways of promoting professionalism and other ideals of ethical journalism
through conducts that would make you function optimally. There is no reason why
the Nigerian press should not open a new chapter of moral re-birth, which would
earn our distinguished practitioners more respect and credibility.”
The governor also advised media executives to embark on
training and retraining of the practitioners as a way of enhancing performance
and productivity.
“It is an established fact that a journalist that is
untrained is worse-off than his or her counterpart that is physically
constrained. It is also true that journalists must necessarily be more informed
than the public they attempt to enlighten. It is highly imperative that factors
contributing to low-standard of performance in the journalism, such as poor
remuneration and lack of understanding of the rudiments of the profession
should be seriously addressed not only by media management but also by
employers of those engaged in the journalism industry.”
Oyinlola, however, assured the media practitioners of his
administration support “by facilitating the performance of their duties
through our open-door policy. It is worthy of note that our administration
believe in building and sustaining relationships as a means of further promoting
the development of Osun State.”
