An
ex-member of the Lagos State House of Assembly has faulted the recent attempt
to confiscate the legislative quarters assigned to them and which was
thereafter sold away by the state government, as part of arrears owed the
lawmakers by the state.
In
a petition sent to the Speaker and made available to Daily Independent, one of
the affected ex-legislators, Mr Ola Animashaun, said there is documentary
evidence at the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) to
show that the apartments located at the MKO Gardens were sold to members of the
Fourth Assembly. “In fact, the transaction was approved by the Governor,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Animashaun wrote.
It
further reads: “Those apartments were paid for with the arrears of our
salaries amounting to over N6.5 million. Members were paid N2.5 million,
leaving a balance of N4.0 million. The three-bedroom apartments were offered
for the sum of N4.0 million each. Find attached herewith a copy of the letter
of offer dated 4 December 2001, which said offer was approved by the governor
on 19 February 2002.
“Thereafter,
deeds of assignment were prepared by LSDPC. Each member, including the former
Speaker, Olorunnimbe Mamora, executed deeds of assignment granting 99 lease of
the apartments to members. All the deeds of assignment were returned to the
office of the Speaker for same to be forwarded to LSDPC. They were in fact
forwarded. These deeds of assignment are now in the office of the Attorney
General of Lagos State.”
Animashaun
also stated that the then LSDPC General Manager, Mr John-Bede Anthonio, had on
12 March 2002, wrote the Speaker giving reasons why the title documents for the
purchased apartments were not ready. A copy of the letter was attached to the
petition.
It was, however, learnt that the current Speaker, Jokotola
Pelumi, is looking into the petition in close detail before giving a reply. It
would be recalled that there have been no love lost between the governor and
some of the lawmakers who lost out at last year’s general election after fallen
out of favour with Tinubu. Besides, the affected former legislators have
incessantly demanded for the payment of their outstanding allowances running
into millions of naira.
