Indiscipline cause of boxers Olympic failure,  says Okorodudu

By Anthony Abolo,Jr.

Reporter, Lagos

Olympian Jerry Okorodudu has attributed Nigeria’s poor outing at the Olympics to indiscipline amongst the officials responsible for the welfare of the athletes.

He said that the boxers and officials were not in good terms all through the period spent in camp in  Cuba and this led to their poor performance in spite of the high hopes and expectations.

According to the ex- Olympian, “the boxers and the officials were not in good terms .They were always fighting and quarrelling amongst themselves. While the officials wanted one thing, the coaches wanted another.”

He further said that the Director of Sports was given bad advice by some officials and this affected the overall performance of the team.He said there was bad blood between the secretary and the coaches as a result of the advice given to the director of sports.

Citing examples, he said that the team did not go with training partners  to Cuba which was wrong saying that sparring partners were needed as a part of the training process.

“We need training partners to enhance the performance of the boxers. All they were doing in Cuba was just  going daily to the gym  to train on their own and return to their rooms. It is not done that way” he said.

Okorodudu said he received an e-mail from one of the boxers telling him that there were some problems in the Nigerian camp in Cuba.

He said he was told that the boxers had locked out their officials in one instance saying that they were not ready to work with Nigerian officials  anymore because they were corrupt and were in the habit of womanizing instead of  taking  interest  in the task that had brought the team  to Cuba in the first place.

He concluded by saying that he was not ready to speculate on what went wrong in Greece until the team returns to tell their story.
