GSM Interconectivity Hassles over
By Tayo Ajakaye
The era of interconnectivity hassles seemed to have been over among the GSM networks as Nigerians now dial from one network to another without any problem.
Interconnection among the GSM operators had been a tug of war until late last year and the first quarter of this year. Some operators said they find it difficult interconnecting with MTN while the largest mobile operator said it would end up with a congested network should it make acede to all interconnection requests being made by operators.
Sources from some operators indicated that subscribers' inability to terminate calls originating from one network to the other may no longer be an issue at the end of August as operators are working on an arrangement that would ensure seamless interconnection with one another. The implication of this is that with this new development, there would be little or no need for subscribers to carry more than one handset at a time as they would all be connected to family, friends and business associates without the usual hitches associated with such connections in the past.
Sources close to MTN revealed that already the operator is connected to Globacom on 63 E1 lines via the Oregun, Lagos switch, while work is already completed on another 63 E1 lines on MTN and Globacom switches in Victoria Island, Lagos.
V-Mobile sources confirmed that they are already connected with the second national carrier, Globacom with 41 E1 lines in Lagos Island, while additional 20 E1 lines are ready for connection at the Oregun switch of Globacom.
Experts from both networks added that the level of connection between both operators at the moment is satisfactory considering the subscriber base of both operators. Both V-Mobile and Glo-Mobile announced a subscriber base of 1.2 million and 1.1 million subscribers respectively.
Investigations also reveal that M-Tel is presently connected to Glo-Mobile with 10 E1 lines in Lagos, a level which both sides noted is ok for the time.
