Nigerians to Enjoy Stable Power Supply in 2007 - NEPA From Christopher Isiguzo in Owerri Managing Director of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), Engr. Joseph Makoju, has announced that the authority would increase power generation to 10,000 mega watts by 2007 which would signal a near end to the frequent power interruption in the country. Declaring open the Enugu Distribution Zonal Management Retreat at the Imo Concorde Hotel, Owerri, Makoju said some machineries have been put in place to realise the target. He noted that the main aim of the target was to close the gap between demand which is presently 6000mw as against supply which is 3000mw, stressing that though the gap was still much, the authority has recorded significant improvement from what used to be the situation in 1999. "In 1999, power generation was 1800, giving room to epileptic power supply, frequent black out but now we have increased it to 3000, which is a tremendous achievement," he said, adding that efforts were being made to wipe off the notion that "NEPA is the most corrupt company in the country." Towards the realisation of the 2007 target, Makoju said four new sub-stations would soon come on stream, with each in Ogun, Ondo, Ajaokuta and Delta, while contract for the Alaoji station in Abia State would soon be awarded before the end of this year.
