Alamieyeseigha Expresses Fears over Onshore/Offshore Suit
From John Iwori in Yenagoa
Governor Diepreye Ala-mieyeseigha of Bayelsa State has expressed serious reservations over the recent lawsuit filled by the 19 governors from Northern states and three other governors from the South-western part of the country, challenging the Onshore/Offshore Dichotomy Abrogation Act.
Alamieyeseigha, who stated this during a courtesy call by Brigadier-General Moham-med Buba Marwa (rtd), said "the action might generate unnecessary controversy which may not be healthy for the country's nascent democracy."
He warned that the action of the 22 governors, if not properly handled, might generate needless tension in the country.
Alamieyeseigha, who wondered why the governors were resuscitating a matter that had been laid to rest by a Supreme Court ruling and an Act of parliament, adde that the action has the capacity to heat up the polity and may provoke a face off between the littoral and non-littoral states.
The governor noted that Marwa has been touching the lives of several people through his humanitarian works, pointed out that people aspiring to leadership positions in the country should emulate his good deeds.
He lauded him for the borehole project his organisation, the Buba Marwa Foundation executed, in the state capital, stressing that it would go a long way in complementing the efforts of the state government in providing potable water to the people.
Speaking at the occasion, Marwa said the objective of his foundation was to spread goodwill to the people through development projects.
Marwa, who noted that the original focus of the Foundation was in the area of scholarships but had now been broadened to include the provision of potable water, skills acquisition, construction of classroom blocks and supply of books and computers, observed that their effort was not intended to compete with state government but rather to collaborate with them.
