2007: 'It's Turn of Bayelsa East'
From John Iwori in Yenagoa

As agitations over various political positions continue ahead of the 2007 general elections, a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Henry Dickson has thrown his weight behind Bayelsa East Senatorial district as the area that should produce Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha's successor.

In a chat with THISDAY at the weekend in Yenagoa, Dickson, who is a Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner, stated that Bayelsa East Senatorial district deserved the governorship seat in 2007 because of what he described as its "enormous contributions to the sustainance of the nations economy".

Made up of Ogbia, Nembe and Brass Local Government areas, the senatorial district is the home of the first executive civilian governor of old Rivers State, Chief Melford Obiene Okilo, the first indigenous military Governor, His Royal Highness, King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Navy Captain Walter Feghabo (rtd) and the incumbent deputy Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

This has prompted other senatorial districts, particularly, Bayelsa West to say it is their turn to produce Alamieyesei-gha's successor in 2007.

However, Dickson told THISDAY that it was improper for anyone to say that because Okilo and Spiff have been governors in the past, Bayelsa East should not been given another chance in 2007.

Dickson contended that while Spiff was a military appointee since the people did not elect him, Okilo got his mandate from all the riverine communities of the old Rivers State that has no basis in the present Bayelsa State.
