Akwa Ibom Assembly Wants Mobil to Suspend Jetty Relocation

Youths of Akwa Ibom State who embarked on a demonstration yesterday to protest the alleged relocation of Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), have found an ally in the the state House of Asssembly that passed a resolution asking Mobil to immediatly suspend any plan to relocate its jetty from Ibeno.

The youths had rioted over MPN's plan to move its jetty domicilled in QIT to Onne in Rivers State and held a demonstration that led to MPN asking its workers to stay at home on Friday for safety reasons.

Following a motion moved by Elder Nse Ekpenyong and seconded by Elder Archibong Inyang, the Assembly asked the state executive to do everything possible to avoid a breakdown of law and order in Ibeno.

The state Assembly Speaker, Chief Nelson Efiong, charged the committee to visit the scene and interact with the parties concerned to be able to present a comprehensive report.

He stressed the need to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the local government area.

The alleged plan to relocate the Mobil jetty to Rivers State and the tension in Ibeno were brought to the notice of the Assembly as a matter of urgent public importance by Mr. Ernest Ukochio II, representing Esit Eket/Ibeno Constituency.

Members, who spoke on the matter like Dr. Etido Ibekwe, the Majority Leader, Obong-unwana Iniobong Ekanem, the Minority Leader, Elder Adasi Ubulom, Barr. Jack Udota, Elder Aniefiok Thompson, Barr. Usen Akpabio, Obong Saturday Akpan, Engr. Ignatius Edet and Engr. Eduok Eduok, all crticised Mobil over its attitude to the state.

Meanwhile, the Assembly has sent a congratulatory message to Senator Udoma Udo Udoma on his elevation to the position of Senate Chief Whip and leader of the South-south Caucus in the Senate.
