FCT: Certificate Revocation in Order - Makinde
By Idowu Sowunmi

A frontline consultant of Town Planning and Physical Development, Mr. Remi Makinde, has supported the revocation of Certificate of Occupancy on Abuja land by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam el-Rufai, describing it as the right way to regularise the city.

Speaking with THISDAY in Osogbo shortly after the conferment of Osun State Merit Award on him, Makinde noted that he was a victim of double allocation. "The land allocated to me was also allocated to about 3 or 4 other people. I couldn't get hold of the land until 9 years after. The initial allocations were done manually, therefore there were no adequate records. But now the FCT minister is ready to computerise the allocation and put the Geographical Information System (GIS) to ensure proper data bank. This would help us greatly."

He added that the population explosion today in Abuja is unexpected, saying "Abuja has the population of 7 million people in the metropolitan area whereas it was planned for less than a third of this. Now the Federal Government has come to the rescue by developing the satellite towns to address the explosion."

On the Federal Govern-ment's housing policy, Makinde urged government to create the enabling environment that would assist Nigerians. "Because it is not possible for government to deliver the quantity of houses we need in Nigeria. But the private-sector-participation on national housing delivery should be encouraged. There should be a land allocation for willing developers. There must be easy access for funds from the banks and other financial institutions," he maintained.

Makinde expressed his appreciation and thanked the people and government of Osun State, noting that "this is one of the highest honours I have received in my life."
