Athens: Why Nigeria Failed - Onigbinde
By Idowu Sowunmi
As the Olympics games comes to an end today, former Chief Coach of Super Eagles, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, has said Nigeria does not deserve any medal because of the country's poor preparation for the event.
In a chat with THISDAY shortly after he was conferred with Osun State Merit Award in Osogbo, Onigbinde, who is now the General Manager/ Technical Director of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Ibadan, noted that "it amazes me why people express disappointment at our performance at Athens 2004. For it would be against the natural law of nature for us to have achieved something better than what is being seen. Because you cannot have something for nothing," adding that "to perform at that level, there is a need for a great deal of foresight, planning and perfect execution of the plans."
The former chief coach observed that while the technologically advanced countries have made use of various technologies to develop themselves even in the area of sports, Nigeria is still at the lowest web of development and "we are not moving."
When asked to compare the nation's performance at the recently concluded All African Games (COJA) in Abuja, Onigbinde said "competition at African level is different from competition at the international level. Technological advancement is virtually the same except in places like South Africa and some countries in North Africa. So, if we are competing among the African nations, we may excel. But when we go outside Africa, the whole truths prevailed."
On the issue of foreign Technical Adviser for Super Eagles, Onigbinde pointed out that as an educationist, "I welcome education from anywhere and appreciate it. But I want to know the background of the person coming to educate me. I want to know his past. Nigeria should not be turned into a garbage industry.
