Ebonyi Appeals to FG over Poor Water From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Ebonyi State capital, Aba-kaliki and other communities in the state may face acute water scarcity in the coming dry season unless Ezillo Water Scheme, a major source of water which has almost become non-functional due to obsolete facilities was rehabilitated. The General Manager of Ebonyi State Water Corpo-ration, Engr Paul Okorie, therefore appealed to Federal Government that is handling the repair of the scheme to expedite action on the rehabilitation of the project, which it awarded to Reynold Constu-ction Company (RCC) since 2002. According to Okorie, Federal Government offered to reconstruct the scheme to support Ebonyi State in its fight to eliminate guinea worm and awarded the contract of reviving the scheme to RCC in October 22, 2002 for N805 million and with initial payment of N160 million. But Okorie lamented that instead of replacing the vertical pumps, which have become obsolete and were the major problem of the project, RCC chose to lay 20 kilometer pipeline for water reticulation. The General Manager disclosed that the whole project has been abandoned, while two out of the three pumps, which distribute water from the scheme are dead and the only one still functioning might break down anytime. He noted that the contract awarded to RCC, which was billed to be completed after nine months, was yet to meet 50 per cent completion after two years.
