Council Boss Warns Political Distractors From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Port Harcourt City in Rivers State, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini, has cautioned political distractors against acts capable of fueling crisis in the city. The warning by the council helmsman came against the backdrop of allegations that he plays ethnic card in the appointments into the council, a financier of a cult group in the city and embarking on unnecessary settlements of councilors with the meagre resources. Nmerukini at a press briefing in his office strongly denied those allegations, saying appointments into key positions or offices in the council was a total spread across the three constituencies that make up the Port Harcourt City after a wide consultations. Besides, he specifically argued that "the appointment of the supervisors of the council was done without his involvement as stakeholders in each of the constituencies submitted names of people so deem fit to play supervisory role in the council." "I was not there, when the people chose who to be appointed into the council. The criteria adopted constituency by constituency, I do not know. I did not take part or dominate anybody, so I don't see where I would be blamed in the selection of supervisors for the council," he maintained. The council boss stressed that Port Harcourt City council is the only council in the state that appoint people across the divides and further challenged other local government councils in the state to show such magnanimity. "I stand to challenge any local government in the state which says it employs or appoints people from other ethnic group in the state to hold certain key offices other than Port Harcourt. I cannot imagine why anybody can say that Port Harcourt City Chairman is one- sided or play ethnic card in his appointment," he noted.
