N/Assembly Probes Closure of Chinese Firm
From Amby Uneze in Calabar

Public Petitions Commit-tee of House of Representatives, Abuja has started the probe into what led to the closure of a Chinese firm, the Western Metal Processing Company Limited (WEMPCO) by the Cross River State government.

The company, which was closed down recently, has been accused of not working in line with the Memoran-dum of Understanding (MOU) as well as denying the host communities of their entitlements among other illegal activities.

The probe followed series of petitions written by a non-governmental organisation to the lower house, urged them to look into the activities of the firm which bothers on working against the laws of the land.

At the public hearing in Ikom, Cross River State, the chairman of the committee, Hon. Chudi Ofodile, promised that his committee would do justice to the issue by hearing from both sides before passing judgment.

Ofodile urged both parties to maintain peace and remain clam and not to take laws into their hands until the committee finishes its work which he believed would be to the satisfaction of both parties.

In his remarks, Hon. Eddy Ogan described the public hearing as the beauty of democracy, where everybody is given an opportunity to contribute for a way forward.

Ogan, who stated that he was in Ikom because the matter concerns his constituency since he was not a member of the public petitions committee but that of the capital market, promised the people that the truth must be unveiled at the end of the day.

Presenting their grievance, many groups spoke in favour of the firm (WEMPCO) and appealed to the state government to lift the ban, as the firm has assisted immensely to the well-being of the people of the area.
