NEPAD to Encourage Cassava Production From Cletus Akwaya in Abuja New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) has said it planned to turn Nigerian cassava farmers into net exporters of the product under Federal Government's cassava production programme. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on NEPAD, Chief (Mrs.) Chinyere Asika, who stated this yesterday at a press briefing in Abuja, said NEPAD had identified West and East Africa as regions for production of cassava, adding that the products would be exported to Southern and Northern African sub-regions. The cassava programme, she observed, was one of the numerous initiatives being coordinated by NEPAD in line with aims and objectives of the continental initiative to fast track Africa's development. She added that from information supplied by the Honourary Presidential Adviser on Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, cassava had more than 2000 uses apart from being a veritable source of livestock feeds. "In every ministry, there are NEPAD projects, the ministries and parastatals are the implementing agencies, we are facilitators," she stated. Asika said arrangements have been concluded to host the first national workshop for NEPAD state coordinators in Abuja beginning from tomorrow. "The objectives of the workshop are among others to create forum for interaction and dialogue among state coordinators and other stakeholders, educate state coordinators on the mission, objectives and goals of NEPAD and their esponsibilities with regard to the implementation of NEPAD programmes at the state level, work out modalities on how NEPAD projects can be better implemented at the state level and explain the workings of NEPAD at global, regional, sub-regional, national and state levels," she stressed.
